Wainting For a Lap Lane

"Waiting For a Lap Lane 3" by Andrew Daniel
9" x 12" (23cm x 30cm) oil in wood panel

I really enjoyed painting these stripes around the models shoulders. She also had a sweet warmth to her face, which was accentuated by having the rest of her head covered by her cap!

Low Tide Arcata Bay Pines

"Low Tide Arcata Bay Pines" by Andrew Daniel
oil painting on wood 6" x 10" (15cm x 25cm)
available in my online shop

My friend Paul Rickard took me out to the Arcata Wildlife Sanctuary to show me one of his favorite spots to paint. Soon enough he had me tromping out into the salt flats to get a better angle of the this lone pine out on the edge to the shore. At low tide the flats still had a fair amount of water available to soak into my sneakers.

It was important to paint quickly, before the tide came back, and to capture the shifting light effects in the sky. But later I spent some time going over the piece with a tiny brush in the studio, to create textures and atmosphere.

Looking at John Singer Sargent's Portraits.

When I have some spare time lately, I have been taking a closer look at John Singer Sargent's Portraits. While I draw them, I'm especially enjoying the way he creates mood with shadow around the eyes, and showdow in general. I'm also interested in the way he will idealize the form with gently curving lines, the nose, brow line, jaw line, often feel quite graceful.

"Castle Rock" by Andrew Daniel
oil on wood  6" x 6" (15cm x 15cm)
available in my online shop

I've been painting up in Trinidad a lot lately. I keep getting finding myself drawn to this island, working it into several compositions. Finally I thought I might just focus in on the Castle Rock directly and paint a portrait of it.

Sea Stacks in the Mist

"Sea Stacks in the Mist" By Andrew Daniel
8"x10"(20cm x 25cm)
oil on canvas mounted on wood
available in my online shop

It was really interesting to develop the distance in this painting with the repeated shapes of the rocks, covering each layer with more haze as they moved away from me.
