Tummy Rub

"Tummy Rub" by Andrew Daniel
Oil on wood 6" x 10"
Available from the artist

I painted three paintings for the Humcats fund raiser. Two were angry cats, and then there was this adorable one. Apparently there is more appetite for irritated cats then cuddly ones. I don't have a theory for this, but it was a fun surprise to see that this was the cat that came back!

Devon's Dream of Death

"Devon's Dream of Death" by Andrew Daniel
20" x 16" Oil on canvas
Available from the artist

I painted this during the drop in figure group at Eureka Studio Arts. I couldn't relate to the pose so I started goofing around, putting the skeleton in the background. It made me laugh, that's all that I can say. I'm not proud.

This is the second time I've had someone all dressed up to go out, only to have them sitting and looking at their phones. It cracks me up!

"Doctor Rock" by Andrew Daniel

"Doctor Rock" by Andrew Daniel
12" x 16" oil on canvas board
Available at North Coast Open Studios!

Last summer I got to go camping in the Siskiyou Wilderness with Rick Tolley and John Crater. We spent one of the days painting views of Doctor Rock. I liked how the formation rose up from this tree covered mountainside.

Expecting Cow

"Expecting Cow" by Andrew Daniel
Oil on wood 11" x 7"
Available at North Coast Open Studios

I've been watching Michelle Murphy-Fergusen and Faye Honoroff do these fun and quirky cow portraits for years now. I've been wanting to play along. Call it a guilty pleasure, I just so enjoy the funny expressions.

Luffenholtz Beach from Above

Here's another one photographed on the scene! I painted his last week over Luffenholtz Beach in the morning. The colors that day were so brilliant from the bright sun!

Mustard Field with Houses

I was interested in all of the varied textures in this subject, letting the variety inspire movement in my brushwork.

"Curve in the Road" by Andrew Daniel

I went back out to Blue Lake to add another layer of paint on this one yesterday. I think it's done. I was really focused on using loose, fast, spontaneous brushwork. I figure if I make a mistake, I can just paint over it so no loss. When there is this much variety in the brushwork and color, it allows me to adjust things in the painting to follow the paintings needs...

Young Woman with Red Hair

"Young Woman with Red Hair"
By Andrew Daniel
Oil on canvas
Available through the artist.

I painted this piece as an exercise in loosening up my approach to portraits and using more expressive paint. It was really interesting for me to push my sensibilities with the paint. Several times I thought I was close to being done, only to find that the painting by Carolyn Anderson that I was consulting for help in problem solving showed more variety, so I kept at the process of pushing the painting further. In the end, I think I learned a lot about the range of possibilities the paint can offer, I also learned that variety in paint application can bring a certain vitality and immediacy to the painting. Tho I probably won't make a practice of painting this thick all the time, I do have a stronger sense in the importance showing the "artist's hand" in the painting.
