I started this painting during one of our Sunday get togethers at the Arcata Marsh. I was really interested in the variety of misty hues in the distance.
I wanted to tell the story of the models expression as well as the sensuality of the nude and the silk fabrics. Makes for a feeling of emotional vulnerability that is a very engaging subject to explore.
Just got back from a painting camp out with Rick Tolley and John Crater on the North Fork of the Smith. It was great to spend a weekend putting nature and painting ahead of anything else! Started 5 paintings while we were there. This one was my favorite.
I painted three paintings for the Humcats fund raiser. Two were angry cats, and then there was this adorable one. Apparently there is more appetite for irritated cats then cuddly ones. I don't have a theory for this, but it was a fun surprise to see that this was the cat that came back!
I painted this during the drop in figure group at Eureka Studio Arts. I couldn't relate to the pose so I started goofing around, putting the skeleton in the background. It made me laugh, that's all that I can say. I'm not proud.
Artists across Humboldt are stopping what they are normally doing to discover how truly difficult it is to paint a cat, in order to participate in the annual fund raising event HumCats!
Last summer I got to go camping in the Siskiyou Wilderness with Rick Tolley and John Crater. We spent one of the days painting views of Doctor Rock. I liked how the formation rose up from this tree covered mountainside.
I've been watching Michelle Murphy-Fergusen and Faye Honoroff do these fun and quirky cow portraits for years now. I've been wanting to play along. Call it a guilty pleasure, I just so enjoy the funny expressions.
Here's another one photographed on the scene! I painted his last week over Luffenholtz Beach in the morning. The colors that day were so brilliant from the bright sun!
