I painted this piece over a couple months this summer at the Arcata Marsh. It is one of the pieces that I've created for an upcoming show at the 1st Street Gallery in Eureka. The show will be seven artists making art about Humboldt Bay. In the front of the gallery will be 3 artists who are exploring more conceptual work that discusses the many issues of the bay. In the back there will be 4 landscape artists exploring the beauty of the bay region.

Today, I was out on the bay, painting the salt marsh and the bridges between Samoa and Eureka. I tried something different today. In order to get the depth and texture of the grasses, I tried using much thicker paint.

I worked on this painting over a couple mornings during a family camp out at A. W. Way campground near Petrolia. The weather was lovely, a quintessential Humboldt Weekend.  I really was attracted to the reflections in the water of the distant hill.

I worked on this large painting over a series of sunny mornings at the Ma-le'l Dunes Forest. I was really attracted to the patterns of light and cast shadow from the tree trunks. Also, the texures of the trunks were really interesting to play with. I'm interested in revisiting these ideas on an even larger scale.

I worked on this painting over a series several mornings this month. I was really interested in the way the mist enveloped the hills in the background, and the lavender color it created, reflecting in the water.

This piece was recently finished in time for North Coast Open Studios. I'm very excited about my new landscapes. For a long time I have wanted to get into painting larger landscapes. With this one, I am finally feeling like I can make the whole large painting flow together smoothly. 

I started this piece last fall, excited by the reflections of the clouds in the foreground. I visited the spot several times, starting with fall oranges, then eventually covering them over with spring colors….

It was so fun coming back so many times, and discovering new subtleties to put in. It was a let down when I was finally finished, because the painting spot had come to feel like home over the months of the project!

I got to visit this beach several times on sunny days for this painting. During the summer it was a mad house, people and dogs everywhere, but there was some days during the winter, that were gorgeously sunny, and the beach was quiet.

I've been spending a lot of time at the Arcata Marsh, this area has been recently opened up to the bay water to flow in. They've opened a hole in the levee to let salt water into this field, over time it will become a salt water marsh with hundred year old seeds opening from the natural seed bank. 

I've been really attracted to the cool colors from the reflected sky that wind their way through the warm tones of the grasses.
