"Curve in the Road" by Andrew Daniel

I went back out to Blue Lake to add another layer of paint on this one yesterday. I think it's done. I was really focused on using loose, fast, spontaneous brushwork. I figure if I make a mistake, I can just paint over it so no loss. When there is this much variety in the brushwork and color, it allows me to adjust things in the painting to follow the paintings needs...

Young Woman with Red Hair

"Young Woman with Red Hair"
By Andrew Daniel
Oil on canvas
Available through the artist.

I painted this piece as an exercise in loosening up my approach to portraits and using more expressive paint. It was really interesting for me to push my sensibilities with the paint. Several times I thought I was close to being done, only to find that the painting by Carolyn Anderson that I was consulting for help in problem solving showed more variety, so I kept at the process of pushing the painting further. In the end, I think I learned a lot about the range of possibilities the paint can offer, I also learned that variety in paint application can bring a certain vitality and immediacy to the painting. Tho I probably won't make a practice of painting this thick all the time, I do have a stronger sense in the importance showing the "artist's hand" in the painting.

Abby in Ballet Costume by Andrew Daniel

"Abby in Ballet Costume" by Andrew Daniel
30" x 30" oil on wood panel
contact artist for purchase

My daughter performed i this costume for her Spring Ballet Recital last year. It was fascinating to see her showsuch control and grace, usually dance class is in my mind as a coordination of pick up and drop off times. I was so surprised to see her up on stage with the other students showing such an improvement in her skill level, so self possessed.

Painting this piece was a novel challenge, with the subtlety of the transparent Tutu and the bold red checked pattern.

This piece is on exhibit in my solo show at the Upstairs Art Gallery in Umpqua Bank in Arcata until the end of the month.

Bay Tanks

"Bay Tanks" by Andrew Daniel
8" x 10" (20cm 25cm) oil on wood panel
 available through First Street Gallery

I met with Leo Stafsness, on a heavily overcast day to paint the bay, a few weeks ago. We talked shop a bit and then got down to work. Both of us kept it small, due to time constraints. I thought I'd give the white tanks across the bay their 15 minutes of fame. The repeated cylinders always grab my eye...

This piece is part of a show dedicated to the theme of the Humboldt Bay at the First Street Gallery in October/November. Some of our Lost Coast Daily Painters will be represented in the show. Besides myself, there will be bay landscapes from Stock Schlueter, Kathy O'Leary and Mimi Laplant in the back gallery. In the front Gallery Cindy Hooper has 6 video installations and Mary Mallahan has a large scale ceramic model of the bay.

Field of Mustard Flowers

"Field of Mustard Flowers" by Andrew Daniel
16" x 24" (40cm x 60cm) oil on wood panel
available through First Street Gallery

Every year I am struck by the amazing show of color the mustard flowers in my neighborhood display. In the past I have done small pieces to explore the idea, but this year I made a point of doing a larger painting. It was so fun apply layer after layer of intense right out of the tube yellows, layered with greens to provide depth. I'm looking forward to next year, I want to go larger!

Brilliant Afternoon Light Arcata Marsh

"Brilliant Afternoon Light Arcata Marsh" by Andrew Daniel
16" x 24" (40cm x 61cm) oil on wood panel
available through First Street Gallery

I was so excited by the combination of brilliant blues in the water and intense green of the duckweed. Fortune smiled upon the painter this summer and provided several richly sunny afternoons as I worked on this one.

The opening will be this Saturday October 4th during Arts Alive! from 6-9pm. Come drop by and say Hi!

Morning Light on Liscomb Slough

"Morning Light on Liscomb Slough"
12" x 16" (30cm x 40cm) oil on wood
available through First Street Gallery

The morning here in Humboldt is my favorite time to paint. Everything is soft, wet from the mist, slowly waking up, and waiting for the sun to come out.  I was really inspired by the bands of blues and purples, and the oyster beds waiting for their morning maintenance visit.

I know there is also a ceramicist building a large scale model of the bay and a photographer who also is dealing with bay issues.

Humboldt Bay Bridges

"Humboldt Bay Bridges" by Andrew Daniel
11" x 14" oil on wood panel
available through 1st Street Gallery

Today, I was out on the bay, painting the salt marsh and the bridges between Samoa and Eureka. I tried something different today. In order to get the depth and texture of the grasses, I tried using much thicker paint.
